What is the CSID Honor Orchestra?
The top Freshmen and Sophomores around the district are invited to try out for the Honor Orchestra in October. In November, those that are selected have two rehearsals and a concert. This is a wonderful opportunity for underclassmen to work with other top students to grow their talent. A prominent conductor is brought in by the district especially for this event. Students who participate, enjoy working with others who have a love for playing and enjoy learning from an instructor who can bring out their best. Even if you aren't participating in the district orchestra this year, it's worth going to the concert to hear them play and to support your fellow tigers.
*A note to incoming 9th and 10th grade students: It’s worth practicing over the summer in order to be at the level to be invited to tryout in October, you’ll be so glad you were able to participate in this event.*
This year's dates:
Tryouts: October 19th
Rehearsal: November 14th
Rehearsal and Concert: November 19th
What is Regional Orchestra?
Top students are invited by their directors to try out for the Regional Orchestra in September. Those that are selected are placed in a regional orchestra according to their skill level demonstrated in tryouts. In November, they will have rehearsals and a concert. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to work with other top students in the region and learn new skills. Even if you aren't participating in a regional orchestra this year, it's worth going to the concert to hear them play and support your fellow tigers.
This year's dates:
Tryouts: September 28
Concert: November 22
Solos & Ensembles Overview
Solos & Ensembles is a UIL contest held in February. Students prepare a piece as either a solo, duet, trio, or more and work hard to master their piece to perform well enough at the event to get top marks. The competition, like the UIL Orchestra competition, this is not a ranking competition, but a competition against a standard. Performers are graded on a scale for various aspects of performance and try to achieve the highest marks in each. Obtaining ones in all areas, aka “Sweepstakes,” is the goal. Solo & Ensemble students are also required to perform at the annual Holiday Gala in early December and are expected to know their pieces and perform well for that event. Decisions on who participates are made in October. Usually you will be invited to participate by your directors, but you can ask to join if you think you’ve improved enough.
This year's dates:
Invitations: October
Holiday Gala Performance: Dec 6th
Competition: Feb 8th
Student Leadership
Student Leadership is very important for the health of the program. Student Leaders set the tone for rehearsals, help guide the Director in making decisions which affect the whole program, and help each group function efficiently. The Orchestra Council is made up of various Student Leaders and the Executive Committee is made up of the top Leadership positions who serve as advisors to the Directors and help make major decisions for the Program.
Attendance and communication are essential to the functionality of a good Leadership Team. We do not have empty titles without work and participation in the Tiger Orchestra Program. Students who fail to meet the expectations for attendance, communication, and service to their Office may be removed from said office and duties at the Director’s discretion.
There are many positions that fill out the Leadership Council. If you are interested in knowing more about any position, check out the requirements and duties in the handbook.
